Writers & Readers: a Fireside Discussion with Soledad O'Brien and Killer Mike

Writers & Readers brings writers and thinkers together with their audience for in-depth, insightful, and inclusive community conversations.

Join two of today's most articulate and eloquent advocates for equity and inclusion in a fireside discussion confronting today's most pressing social issues which simultaneously define America and deny the American Dream to so many.

Soledad O'Brien is an outspoken champion of diversity, giving voice to the underserved and disenfranchised through her syndicated political show, Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien, through her Emmy-winning reporting, and her documentary series, Black in America and Latino in America. She is the author of a critically-acclaimed memoir The Next Big Story: My Journey through the Land of Possibilities and the founder of PowHERful, a non-profit foundation that helps bridge the gap of opportunities for young minority women from low-income families to attend college, providing financial assistance, mentoring and holistic support they need to earn a degree and find their path to success.

Michael Render aka Killer Mike - a nickname he received for 'killing the microphone' - is a Grammy award-winning rapper and actor making waves in the political arena for his gripping commentary on ongoing social issues confronting America. A featured speaker in MIT’s Hip Hop Speaker Series, Killer Mike delivered the second lecture in the series, titled “Race Relations in the US,” in which he explored a wide range of topics including music, misogyny, community activism, cultural appropriation, social media, police brutality and the landscape after Ferguson. His documentary series Trigger Warning with Killer Mike premiered on Netflix in 2019.
