Off the Ruling Class: Stories from a Cold Case at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Political activists bombed Rodin's "The Thinker" at the Cleveland Museum of Art on March 24, 1970. Cleveland Police implicated the Weather Underground, but arrested no one. Author Randal Doane reviews the motive, ability and opportunity of the perpetrators, as well as the artful decision-making of museum director Sherman Lee. He analyzes recent confessions about the bombing and takes stock of how people make sense of "The Thinker" as a physical and digital object. Randal also explores how the bombing of "The Thinker" is connected to contemporary disputes over historical statues, with regards to the scarcity of the commons in American life.
